User Reviews about Toy Story 3 The Video Game
I wasn't expecting much from this game based on past experience with video game titles based on movies. More often than not, these titles are poor efforts for the studios to cash in on the success of a blockbuster. That is not the case with Toy Story 3.
Toy Story 3's story mode loosely follows the movie with some creative liberties taken along the way. Players can play as Woody, Jessie, and Buzz. The levels can be a bit tedious at some times but there are plenty of checkpoints. I'd say that this game is marketed at younger fans so it is just the right difficulty level for them.
Toybox mode is where the game really shines. Players play as Woody, Jessie, or Buzz and they assume the role of the sheriff of a Western town. The town is populated with small toy characters and green aliens who you can customize outfits and hair for. The players get to earn money to buy new characters, build new buildings, and unlock new levels. Past characters such as Bo Peep and Stinky Pete make appearances as well as newer characters such as Lotso. The game features voice work from most of the cast of the movie. Toybox mode is easily the best part of the game. The split screen two player mode is also a great future.
I would recommend this game for kids aged 8-13. It's a fun game but can get a bit repetitive at times. Any fan of the movie is sure to get a kick out this game as it is very faithful to the movies while maintaining a personality of its own. -- One of the Best Video Games Based on a Movie
The Toy Story 3 video game finally breaks the "licensed character" curse - it's actually good! There is plenty to do in this sandbox realm and kids and adults alike will enjoy it for hours. There is some gentle cartoon violence (the play picks up both good and bad guys and throws them), but no harm is displayed. -- Sandbox Fun within the Toy Story Universe
I will absolutely admit I went into this title with the wrong attitude. Totally the wrong attitude. As a now 29-year-old gamer, what on earth could this game offer me?
I also admit I really enjoy Pixar's movies, but still...I figured I had to be at least 20 years too old for this title.
Oh how wrong I was.
Toy Story 3 opens the same way the movie did, with the train out of control, and your mission to save the orphans. This is a nice little action sequence which plays on rails for the most part, but is very smooth and quite satisfying.
After this opening, the game changes pace dramatically. What's this? A sandbox game? Put buildings down, finish quests, dress your villagers? Somehow, it's all excellent fun. It's like the developers took the best bit from a ton of genres.
Toy Story 3 is part:
1.) World of Warcraft
2.) Tomb Raider
3.) Stunt driving
4.) Mario Galaxy
5.) The Sims
6.) Pilot Wings
7.) Other games that elude me, title-wise.
Oh don't get me wrong, the depth of all these games in their entirety certainly isn't there, but parts of these games are, and as a whole it works very, VERY well. It's an exceptionally well-made title.
Aside from the sandbox-ing, you can also pick from a set of levels ranging from Andy's house to infiltrating Zerg's underground lair (just like in Toy Story 2, the movie!). These are fun to play through, and aside from getting from point A to B, it's enjoyable collecting all the hidden items which range from outfits to hairstyles etc etc for your villagers in the sandbox mode.
I only encountered a couple of glitches: At one point I was able to walk through clothing buildings, and at another point I was unable to get out of the tiny racing car. In each case, a quick save and exit and going back in fixed it. No big deal.
Overall, this is one of the most fun games I've played in a while. Really makes a change from the death and destruction that permeates other titles on the 360/PS3 (not that I don't enjoy those games, too, but you know what I mean).
Age-range for this title is likely 8 and up. I'm not sure a 5-year-old could do all the tricky driving and platforming. I had trouble with some of the bits, though nothing was too taxing, thankfully!
4.5 stars out of 5. Highly recommended! -- The best Toy Story game, ever.
This game is good for younger kids, though I do enjoy it in small increments.
The puzzles are not too difficult but sometimes take a little more patience than other games based on movies. -- fun in small incrememnts
Of course, this game has all the familiar Toy Story characters, so it was a lot of fun to play this game at the time of the release of Toy Story 3 the Movie. The characters translate well to a video game medium since they are all original CG characters. I was a little disappointed with the world that was built for the characters to play in. The quality of the graphics could have been better to make this much more visually stimulating. A lot of it is pretty cliche, nothing unique. Andy's room probably looks the best. I was also disappointed with the lego like supporting cast of characters. They did do a pretty good job at getting the voice actors to sound close to Tim Allen and Tom Hanks. They could have put a lot more effort into this game as it really does not compare to the visually rich graphics of other games but if you really enjoyed the movie, its fun to be able to come home and interact with the characters on your game console. -- A balanced review.
